Pakistan braces for intense nationwide heatwave

Pakistan is expected to experience an intense heatwave from May 7 to May 11, with temperatures likely to rise sharply across Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The Met Office warned that several districts in Sindh and Balochistan could witness extremely dangerous temperatures ranging between 46°C and 50°C during the ongoing spell. The most affected areas are expected to include Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Sibi, Turbat and Panjgur.
In southern Punjab, including Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan, as well as Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, temperatures are likely to remain between 43°C and 47°C. Major cities in upper Punjab and KP, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera and Sialkot, are expected to record temperatures between 39°C and 43°C.
Karachi is likely to remain relatively cooler compared to interior regions, but temperatures in the port city may still rise between 35°C and 38°C amid hot and dry weather conditions.
Health experts and weather authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak daytime hours, especially between noon and late afternoon. People have also been advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and take extra precautions for children, elderly individuals and those suffering from heat-related illnesses.
The warning comes as several regions of Pakistan continue to face prolonged dry weather and increasing pressure on water and electricity supplies. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and may issue further advisories if the heatwave intensifies in the coming days.
